Triathlon Haiku: Soma Half-Ironman
November 1, 2007

Wetsuit check. Bike check.
Nutrition neglected, I
faced dire consequences straits on run.
Yep. I over corrected my salt error from Ironman in April. In that race, I had way, way too much sodium in my system. This time around, at a race half the distance, but in much higher temperatures, I encountered paralyzing cramps in my quads and calves. It was fairly demoralizing, but the event was spectacular. Hopefully, I will have photos to share.
Sarah raced the quarter — basically half of what I did, and did really well. When she arrived at the start area on race morning, the rear tire on her bike was flat, so I made sure it got fixed up before the start of her race.
When something like that happens, it can cause stress that can follow you for the rest of the day. Judging by the smile on her face, though, stress was no where to be seen.

I didn’t have my head screwed on straight. I should have carried salt along with me on the run. I had a couple of pills left, and that would have helped get me through most of the run.
Another race, another lesson learned. My base fitness is solid, so I think I will be better prepared for Ironman AZ next year if I really stick with my program.
