I can’t take the credit for the image below, but the subject of driving while texting has been on my mind a TON lately, so look for more posts here on the subject.
I think it is incredibly alarming to see that a study found that people who text while driving are twice as likely to cause an accident as a drunk driver. Compared to sober drivers, drunk drivers are four times more likely to cause a car crash; and those who text behind the wheel are EIGHT TIMES MORE LIKELY to cause a crash.
Yet there are no laws in the majority of states that prohibit driving while texting. The statistics are extremely telling, yet Arizona state Senators killed a proposal that would have made it illegal to compose, send or read text messages while driving.
One Senator, Ron Gould, R-Lake Havasu City, had the nerve to question why texting is being singled out. Gould tried to make the comparison between texting while driving and getting the last ice cube out of a Big Gulp cup (Gould obviously has never ridden a bicycle in traffic).
In case lawmakers in Arizona or any other state need any more evidence on just how dangerous driving while texting is, you can send them this image:

Wow, those are some crazy (sobering?) statistics. I text occasionally when at a red light but never while moving. I should probably cut that out as well.
