Notes from Napa

napa_13.jpgBack from Napa. . . .

I had planned to update this post sooner, but I’ve been stuck in “vacay” mode and have been trying to avoid lots of time planted in front of a screen.

Sarah and I had a blast running the Napa to Sonoma half marathon.  The weather was perfect for running — cool and overcast — and we both performed well. Having spent the majority of the summer getting up at the crack o’ dawn to log miles running in blistering heat was beginning to really wear on me. My performance always suffers in the heat because my body expends more energy trying to stay cool, and I’m not nearly as efficient, which translates into a slower pace.

So I did not mind shivering at the start.

Prescott, Jerome & Butt-crack Rock

Last weekend, Sarah and I took a trip up north to explore Prescott and Jerome and do some hiking.

After doing a swim race Saturday morning, we drove up to Prescott. I’d never been there before, but it reminded me a lot of Pocatello. There’s a lot of rich history downtown, including a story in the early 1900s where the majority of the town burned down.

Mt. Humphreys Trip Report

From the parking lot of Arizona Snowbowl, just outside of Flagstaff, Mt. Humphreys, all 12,633 feet of it, looked tame enough.

Being October, the top portion of the mountain had begun to be coated in ice crystals. Driving to the trailhead, Sarah and I were a little nervous when we first saw evidence of frost high on the mountain. Were we prepared for today? Did we pack enough warm clothing and food?

Climbing Mt. Humphreys this Weekend

October 5, 2007 | Leave a Comment

In a few short hours, Sarah and I will be making the drive from Scottsdale to Flagstaff.  Tomorrow, we’ll climb the highest point in Arizona, 12,633 foot tall — Mt. Humphreys.

Right now, it’s looking like the weather near Flastaff could be a little chilly and potentially rainy and could also see a few flurries.  It’s nearly 13,000 feet in elevation at the top.  The temperature in Flagstaff is expected to be 53 degrees tomorrow.

From what I’ve researched, Humphreys is a long, although not too technical hike.  Reports from others said that it took approximately 2.5 -3.5 hours to hike to the top, and the last portion of the trail is not in the best condition.

Plus, there’s a few points along the way where you think you’re at the top, only when you get there, you discover you still have a long way to go.  I’ve encountered “false summits” on other treks, so I know how deflating they can be, depending on how you are feeling.

I’m really looking forward to spending a whole day out tromping around.  It is beautiful up north.  I’ll be sure to take plenty of photos.  We should be back at the ranch early Saturday night.
