AZ Texting While Driving Bill Not Dead After All

by seth on March 5, 2010

The Arizona state Senate has given preliminary approval to a bill that would outlaw text messaging while driving.

If passed by lawmakers, offenders would be slapped with a minimum fine of $50; drivers who caused an accident as a result of texting would be fined $200.

While that is a good start, I still believe that the penalties should be much stiffer. Reckless driving in the state is a misdemeanor, and after two convictions, a driver’s license is revoked.

Implementing penalties similar to what the state currently has for aggressive driving — which also endangers other drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists — seems very appropriate. First time aggressive drivers are required to attend Traffic Survivor School, and also possibly face a 30 day suspension. A second offense within two years results in a Class 1 misdemeanor and license revocation for one year. A Class 1 misdemeanor carries a fine of up to $2,500 and six months in jail.

Here’s hoping we at least get some legislation on the issue passed in this state.

I am really shocked that Sen. Ron Gould, R-Lake Havasu City, continues to be a vocal opponent of legislation against texting while driving. On his webpage, he claims he enjoys motor cycling. Certainly motor cyclists would favor laws that outlaw texting and driving.
