October 11, 2007 | Leave a Comment

Faris Al-Sultan, Ironman World Champion recently sat down with Bob Babbit and Paul Huddle of CompetitorRadio.com.

Al-Sultan talked about the upcoming Ironman World Championship race, his chances, and what it’s like to be a full-time professional athlete.

The most inspiring thing I took away from this interview was something he said near the end:

Mt. Humphreys Trip Report

From the parking lot of Arizona Snowbowl, just outside of Flagstaff, Mt. Humphreys, all 12,633 feet of it, looked tame enough.

Being October, the top portion of the mountain had begun to be coated in ice crystals. Driving to the trailhead, Sarah and I were a little nervous when we first saw evidence of frost high on the mountain. Were we prepared for today? Did we pack enough warm clothing and food?

Climbing Mt. Humphreys this Weekend

October 5, 2007 | Leave a Comment

In a few short hours, Sarah and I will be making the drive from Scottsdale to Flagstaff.  Tomorrow, we’ll climb the highest point in Arizona, 12,633 foot tall — Mt. Humphreys.

Right now, it’s looking like the weather near Flastaff could be a little chilly and potentially rainy and could also see a few flurries.  It’s nearly 13,000 feet in elevation at the top.  The temperature in Flagstaff is expected to be 53 degrees tomorrow.

From what I’ve researched, Humphreys is a long, although not too technical hike.  Reports from others said that it took approximately 2.5 -3.5 hours to hike to the top, and the last portion of the trail is not in the best condition.

Plus, there’s a few points along the way where you think you’re at the top, only when you get there, you discover you still have a long way to go.  I’ve encountered “false summits” on other treks, so I know how deflating they can be, depending on how you are feeling.

I’m really looking forward to spending a whole day out tromping around.  It is beautiful up north.  I’ll be sure to take plenty of photos.  We should be back at the ranch early Saturday night.

Trader Joe’s Cinnamon Grahams: Better Than Crack

trader_joes.jpgOk, so maybe I’m overstating this a little. I’ve never tried crack, so I can’t say with 100% acccuracy just how they compare.

But, if you’re the kind of person who likes a mildly sweet snack that’s plenty crunchy, and just happens to be the perfect vessel for peanut butter, then this is it.

They come in a decent sized package, and I only paid $3.50 for them. Each graham piece is about the size as a quarter old-school graham cracker. The box says a serving is about two-and-a-half pieces. Each serving has 120 calories with 35 of those coming from fat.

I’m planning on taking these along this weekend when Sarah and I conquer Mt. Humphreys, the highest peak in Arizona.
