This Weekend: My First Tri

This Sunday I am racing my first triathlon. It’s an international distance race consisting of a 1200 meter swim (3/4 of a mile), a 30 mile bike ride, and a 6.2 mile run.I’ve been training religiously since the end of June, so I am prepared. I still have two speeds in the water — sink or swim. Sarah has helped me tremendously with my form, so I’ll enter this race with a handful of tricks to help me survive the open water among the thrashing arms and legs of hundreds of other athletes.
I’m really excited about this new challenge, especially considering its just a small segment of the work I’ll put in to prepare for Ironman next April.
For those of you who don’t know, Ironman is an event that is the child of a goup of Navy Seals and endurance athletes in Hawaii who wanted finally settle the argument of who is the fitter athlete, a swimmer, cyclist, or runner.
The distances changed slightly, but the current format is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and a marathon. All raced in the same day, by the same person.
I know what you’re thinking. . .Why? How? and for What?
I’m not exactly ready to put my answers on-screen right now, for a couple of reasons. For one, the answers to those questions have already changed a couple of times, and I’m sure they will change several more during the course of my training.
Until then, I’ve got to get some other races under my belt. And after racing a duathlon (run/swim) a couple of weekends ago, I am chomping at the bit to do another race. So stay tuned. . .
